20-30% advancing from the rear to the front. I use a methodical leapfrog advance with the crossbowmen. A hundred odd crossbowmen and 30-40 swordsmen is usually quite doable for your first takedown. Convert your troops if necessary to create a tougher force. Can you cut back on peasants anywhere? Unneeded water pots, reduce farms, etc?įor attacking, crossbowmen and European swordsmen are the toughest troops, pikemen are next best if you need to dig some moats. Mangonels and ballistae are three sprites each, trebs four. Do you still really need any mangonels, ballistae or trebuchets you may have. Take a good hard look at your defenses to see where they can be reduced. I use crossbows only for defensive missile troops with maybe a few swordsmen or pikemen for last ditch keep defense. Since your troop count will be limited, make them the hardiest available. A few strategically placed towers will usually provide an adequate defense. I usually leave an open main approach to my keep with no gatehouse but will many times wall in the rest of my castle area, inviting the enemy to use the single main open approach. None of the missions require rush tactics or starve-outs to succeed, although many players resort to this. While it's great to assemble a massive army, you have to welcome the additional challenge of working with a smaller army. As each one is eliminated your limit will increase. So, in short, the more lords present the lower your sprite limit. Only when I killed a lord and his castle vaporized did my sprite count increase. Yet my sprite limit did not increase in the slightest. I provided a saved map with all castles intact and the lords under "house arrest", no enemy troops and very few peasants remaining. This was made very clear to me when doing a few walk-throughs recently for the trail missions. Only when one is killed will his sprites be released to be shared by the remaining players. Killing their troops will not increase your limit. You are given your portion and that's your limit until fewer lords exist. The sprite limit seems to be chopped up and apportioned out to you and the number of other lords existing on the map. But it's not one big free for all with the other lords. a shield is two, an occupied siege tower is 5, etc.), oxen, cows, deer, lions, camels, rabbits, chickens, jesters, drunks, etc., everything that moves. That means every peasant (working or not), every military unit (troops and siege machinery, ie. Within this sprite category is everything capable of independent motion (change of location) except birds. Whereas the sprite limit in the original Stronghold was 1500, Crusader's is 2500.
